Passive Houses save 90% of household energy. The first one in the Washington, DC area is being built in East Bethesda on North Chelsea Lane. Check out the blog to follow the progress.

Here's our entry about it from last August, which includes a photo during the demolition. I had to fight with every ounce of conviction I had, when the builders encased the port-o-john in a white wooden scaffold, to keep from spraypainting that it was a "Passive (Out)House". What a great picture that would have made....Still makes me giggle. Sad, but true.

I watched the construction of the house, and I can't believe that the energy costs will be as low as represented - which may explain why the house is still on the market. I saw the insulation that went in, and while granted, there was more than in other new homes, I am pretty sure that the walls of the 1930s/40s homes here are equally as thick. Anyway, I never use the air conditioning either which saves $s too.
