National Naval Medical Center Base Realignment and Closure Commission

The Department of Defense and the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (“BRAC”) Commission has worked to identify mission enhancing efficiencies for U.S. military bases and operations.  In November 2005 the Congress approved, and the President signed into law, final recommendations that directed the closure of some bases and the realignment of military components throughout the country.  The BRAC law requires all these movements to be completed by September 2011.  One such realignment is the closure of Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the transfer of some of its functions to that National Naval Medical Center which will be renamed the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Due to our proximity to the base and the shared border of Jones Bridge Road, EBCA has taken a particular interest in the project. In early 2007 we formed a committee to follow the progress.  View EBCA’s position statement.  We also have a seat on the Montgomery County BRAC Implementation Task Force and are part of the Coalition of Military Medical Center Neighbors.

The Navy’s draft Environmental Impact Statement was released December 14, 2007.  The public will have 45 days to submit comments.  Copies of the draft can be downloaded or viewed at:
